All you need to know about "The Iron Cemetery", Illusion Suite's second album

This is Illusion Suite’s second album and it is to be released on the 29th of March 2013, by Impulse Music. (http://www.impulsemusic.com/browsecatalog/)

Even before “The Iron Cemetery” has reached the stores it has gotten quite a bit of attention. Here you can experience the full story behind the production of “The Iron Cemetary”.

18th of January the album was shown to the public for the first time. Illusion Suite had an exclusive party for special invited guests (press and celebrities of the Norwegian metal scene.)

Eternal Terror wrote an article about the event. After one listen-through the magazine had the following conclusion: “If Illusion Suite was not at the very top of Norwegian prog metal elite before they certainly are now”. You can read the article in full here:

(The article is in Norwegian)

“The Iron Cemetery” has the following content:

Intro (instrumental):                00:55
Orpheus Quest:                        05:03
Uni-Twins:                              05:03
The Iron Cemetery:                 05:35
When love fails:                      04:58
Nero:                                        04:10
Nostradamus first prophecy:   04:23
The Ugly Duckling:                03:35
Premonition:                            05:06

Orpheus Quest: This is a dialog between Orpheus and Hades. Orpheus goes down into the underworld to save his wife that Hades kidnapped.

Uni-Twins: Two different versions of the same person from different parallel universes tries to communicate with each other.

The Iron Cemetery: The concept is explained in more detail later in this article.

When love fails: A story about a boy who is neglected by his mother.

Nero: A simple story about a tyrant from ancient Rome? Or does it have a symbolic dimension?

Nostradamus first prophecy: This song is telling the story of the very first prophecy of Nostradamus.

The Ugly Duckling: This is the classic story about somebody who is not “shining” until he finds the right people to appreciate his qualities.

Premonition: Based on the historical battle between Saladin and the French Christian king that took place in the 12th century.

The album is quite short for a prog metal album. However, the band emphasized quality before quantity and every inch of music on the album has been carefully thought through.

The concept of “The Iron Cemetery”

Nicola Tesla was the scientist that started the building of the Wardenclyffe tower. It was to be used in research, but in reality they never even finished it properly. In Illusion Suite’s alternative reality the tower generates electricity that collides with the atmosphere of the earth. This causes an infectious disease that makes everything into iron to spread.

The cover design on the album is done by Anestis Goudas (http://www.anestisgoudas.com/web/) and the inspiration is taken from the ironized world that tesla’s failed project left behind.

The production of “The Iron Cemetery”

The production of the album was particularly difficult because some of the band’s material was torn apart as two of the members parted from the band in the middle of the recording process.

Luckily Illusion Suite managed to turn a disadvantage into an advantage in the search of a new angle to bring new creativity into the project. Once the new constellation with the current members where formed new creativity came into the project and the members made some of the best work they had done so far.

The first chapter of the project where the drums that was recorded sometime early in the year of 2011 by Roger Bjørge. This was before the band split up.

Illusion Suite was left with drums and some vocal arrangements as the guitar was removed. A new guitar with a different arrangement that still fitted into the musical picture had to be made. This was quite a puzzle, but over the course of four months the band managed to make guitars that would be the new sound for Illusion Suite.

While working on the album the band members would refer to the guitar as “The testosterone guitar”. The former member of “It’s the end”, who had won the progmetal award (http://www.progawards.it/index.php?option=com_muscol&view=artists&letter=I&Itemid=568), had the aggressive guitar style that the band needed.

You can view a few clips from Kim Jacobsen’s outrages guitar playing here:

Next up were the vocal arrangements. This was a process that the band had worked on from the earliest phases of the songwriting, as it was the most time consuming element of a prog music production.

The vocals took a slightly different direction than on the previous album. The sound generally turned out rougher and with more power in order to fit the “testosterone guitar”. In addition to the main vocalist, Bill Makatowicz, Roger Bjørge also participated on both backup vocals and lead vocal.

Here you can see a movie from the vocal recording. The video also contains a full song from the upcoming album at the end.

The bass recording was being done simultaneously with the vocal recording. The bass has got a central part in the music compared to what is normal with other progmetal recordings. Several places on the album the bass has come to play a major part, where it is leading on the music. Clips from the process, showing Dag Erik Johnsen playing bass, can be viewed here:

Most of the strings were arranged after everything else was in place. The synth arrangements on “The Iron Cemetary” binds everything together, and it does so in a new way.

The strings on the album is probably one of the things that extinguish this album the most from the previous one. There is a whole new quality to the arrangement and the sound is more electrical than before.  There is a synergy between the guitar and the synth, and the synth like the guitar, has a leading role in the music.

The mixing process

The album was mixed and mastered at “Fascination Street studios” in Sweden by Jens Bogren. The studio has done bands/artists like Symphony X, Paradise Lost,  James Labrie, Soilwork, Opeth and Amon Amarth to mention a few. The band was very satisfied with the final master and could not have hoped to get a better sound. Under you can see a movie of some of the mixing process:

When Love Fails

Here are the lyrics from "Love fails" from "The Iron Cemetery" by Illusion suite:

He’s staring out the window
as his mother leaves.
He opens a door in his own mind
to search for the company he’d love to find.
This is the first time that he’s left behind
in Christmas time.
He tries to make food on the floor.
He lights up the firework his mom brought home.

Love fails then something breaks down.
Out of despair when deceived he is strengthening his fantasy faculties.

Beating in her daily care
with a fist that hurts or self-sustaining mind games.
The cracks in the wall are beginning to show now.
Drunk in his bedroom she laughs ‘til he wakes.
Then she scares him with faces she makes.
In a soft stream he travels now.
The garden and his fairy lets him in.

Love fails then something breaks down.
Out of despair when deceived he is strengthening his fantasy faculties.

Into the great unknown…

I travel down,
Beneath the stones and rocks I go.
It’s a lonely, lonely road

I had a talk with my angles and daemons
on my world of true affliction.

I rolled the dice. What to do, and believe in?
Which way is the best to walk?

He narrows his consciousness to a state of mind that astral-travels far.
Now is he asleep or wake?
Alone with his sister he’s five years of age;
doesn’t think he can do this alone.
On a soft bed he lays her down
The window of Anubis Lets her in.

Love fails then something breaks down.
Out of despair when deceived he is strengthening his fantasy faculties.

He traveled the stars and then back again.
His mother is waiting this time.
On the floor lies his one-year-old sister.
She’s lifeless.

"Uni-Twins" - Illusion Suite lyrics for "The Iron Cemetery"

Here are the lyrics of "Uni-Twins" from "The Iron Cemetery" by Illusion Suite:

With no intention
I face a door that hides a chain of reactions
Trans-universal eyes unite
Let’s mess around with the God of creation

Can I find a way to reach your soul?
The clockwork spins; divides the uni-twins
Then how can we unify?
We are the twins through time

Feel my soul through the fibers of space
Cosmic events are the soul of the world,
and gathered in a consciousness of life

Am I? Do I exist without a memory of my body
How do I know if I ever lived? What’s real?

With no intention
I face a door that hides a chain of reactions
Cross-universal eyes unite
Let’s mess around with the God of creation

Can I find a way to reach you side?
The clockwork spins; divides the uni-twins
Now in a sense I am your equation
The fool that sought your reflection

Feel my soul through the fibers of space
Cosmic events are the soul of the world
and gathered in a consciousness through life

Feel my thoughts through the fibers of space
Connected thoughts are the soul of the world
And gathered in the consciousness through life

Sense my soul; unite us as one
So I could figure out how to break out
I have been able to cross time, merge your universe with mine
Fare well!

Illusion Suite recording

Hello there guys!

We are now planing on having our album mixed and mastered in August 2012. There are still a few things left to do before we can hand over the files, but things move very rapidly towards a finished product these days.

We made a little presentation of the bass recording for those who are interested

Guitar recording Illusion Suite

Hello to all Illusion Suite fans and other music lovers!

The spring is slowly blooming in Norway and so is the project of recording Illusion Suite's second album. As of now we are completely done with 4 songs on vocal. With exemption of one song we have finished all the lyrics.

We are currently working simuntaneously on bass, vocal and synth. On bass we have a couple of songs down, and the synth is about 50% done.

We are going to present the audience with 4 movies that gives a glimpse into the production of this album.

The first movie comes here and is showing the guitar recording, which was done in nov/des 2011. It was particularly challenging because we had to make the guitar fit both the vocal and drums that was already in place. I am happy to say that this turned out better than we even had dared to hope.

We are extremely satisfied with Kims guitar when it comes to both sound, riffs and energy.

New vocal amp for the Illusion Suite recording

Hello guys. This Christmas I was going to try out my new vocal amp that I purchased to record the second Illusion Suite album, so I decided to record a few christmas carols as christmas presents for my family.

Unfortunately I had a brand new vocal amp that broke down three times after it had just been fixed. The last time it broke down it was as I was recording these christmas songs. Now, the good news is that I was offered the model that is one step up with free shipping because of all the problems.

First I thought I would present these songs only to my family, but then I figured: why not...so here it is: My own version of "Have yourself a merry little christmas":

Have yourelf a merry little christmas by Bill Makatowicz

And with this I want to wish everybody a happy new year. May it be a year in the sign of the metal gods, he, he

"Discovering Illusion Suite"

This weekend I spent working on the project ”Discovering Illusion Suite” which is going to be a independent space opera that I’m doing together with Andreas Ravnestad.  The idea was originally meant for ”Illusion Suite” but when internal problems occurred, before Kim joined the band, I decided to work through different channels to get the project done.

Bill Makatowicz_Andreas Ravnestad_Discovering Illusion Suite

Andreas is a very talented composer that popped out from no-where.  I had never heard about him before I bumped into his music on the Internet… And there he was, not connected to the metal scene in any way, just making awesome music in his own living room, hardly sharing it with anyone. At the time when I became aware of him he had only been composing music for 2-3 years.

Up until this weekend Andreas and me had mainly been working together over the Internet, and that had been working out pretty good. We have now made about 30 minutes with music where the composition and lyrics are 100 percent finished.

When I visited him in Trondheim we immediately hit it off and we turned out to be both efficient and creative together.  Nothing was planned, but everything seemed to work out by itself. We had a short jam session and we tried to unite the music that we had made before we met.  We took some pictures and made some short film clips as we sat there. Before we knew it we had also made a three-minute presentation of the project “Discovering Illusion Suite”. The presentation can be viewed here and shows some of the demo material and the process of making that music.

PLEASE NOTE THAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR A FEMALE VOCALIST FOR THIS PROJECT. IF YOU ARE INTERESTED OR KNOW SOMEONE WHO COULD BE THE RIGHT PERSON; SOMEONE WITH REAL PUNCH IN HER VIOICE PLEASE CONTACT AT makatowicz@hotmail.com
To listen more to the project please visit:

As I grew more familiar with Andreas it also turned out that he has a lot of other gifts and talents. I already knew that he was a good lyric author as I have worked with him on lyrics before. His profession is computer engineering. Besides this he has quite a lot of knowledge about cars which is very practical and physics such as the theory of relativity, quantum physics and other theoretic knowledge and laws about the universe. This was a huge advantage when writing about a theme based album such as “Discovering Illusion Suite”. I also learned firsthand that he is a great cook, and he served me one of the best steaks I have ever had.

Bill Makatowicz_Nidarosdomen_Oslo

In Trondheim I had quite a spectacle when visiting “Nidarosdomen”. It is a Norwegian Cathedral originally constructed in the times of a famous Norwegian Viking king called “Olav the holy” (around year 1000-1100). Objectively speaking it is probably not more impressive than those over dimensioned renaissance churches in Italy, but personally I found it more interesting, probably because Renaissance culture has already been referred to a lot in pictures and movies aldready.

Illusion Suite – past, present and future

For Illusion Suite things went very fast once we figured out that it was not possible to work together any more. On one hand it was a great relief because things had gotten so bad that it was difficult to get anything done. On the other hand it was a shame because the album was 90 percent finished. We had only little more than to compose about 30 percent of the vocal and it would all be done.

After the break up we immediately started to look for a new guitar player. We didn’t get to try many people before the right one came along. Kim Jacobsen played drums, guitar and had even won the world champion chip in Prog metal together with his band “It’s the end”. Talking to the guy he also seemed very motivated and ready to go. So left now was only to try the actual recording. He fired up the guitar and recorded a song in a few days. It sounded smashing and he was unquestionable the right man for the job.

Kim Jacobsen Illusion Suite

So now, as it is, we have about 6 songs to complete with guitar and about 4 songs to complete with vocals before the album is finished. We estimate to have the recordings finished before February starts so this will mean that the album will be in the stores around may or june 2012.

For those who are interested in a glimpse even further into the future I am also working on a project together with Andreas Ravnestad. This will be a project outside Illusion Suite. However the project is called: “Discovering Illusion Suite” and is about a journey through space and time to find out what “Illusion Suite” really is. The project is nearly finished as there is only one more song to compose before the whole concept is complete.

Progpower USA - the ultimate concert experience

I wrote this about right after I came back from our performance at Progpower festival 2010. At the time I did not have a blog, but now I do...Then it is only natural that this becomes my first blog entry.

This article is not about prog power from an audience point of view, but from an artist’s point of view. The experience of playing at progpower USA was so awesome. The audience gave so much of themselves that I feel I want to give something in return by writing this.

Illusion Suite_Progpower 2010
Illusion Suite_Progpower 2010

As the vocalist in Illusion Suite I have to say that this is the best arrangement we have played at. The audience was extremely dedicated and meeting them was somehow like meeting parts of our family.

One of the things that made it especially exiting to be an artist at this arrangement was the myriad of back stage area and VIP bars. It sometimes felt like being in an ants mound where the artist, as the queen, had access to the whole place, and it really took some time to get to know all the hidden back door and corridors.

Illusion Suite at progpower 2010

What was unique for us with the progpower experience was the moment when the into to our set played, before the curtains had opened up. I remember the crowd started to cheer. One could not really see the people out there; just hear the cheering of the crowd.  That was the time when I really started to get nervous…

Please feel free to leave comments. In fact I would appreciate it. Thanks guys!!!
